No regrets. That is what I get from today’s readings. In the first reading, God tells Solomon that he can have anything he wants…like rubbing the lamp and the genie giving you whatever you want. Solomon could have asked for long life, untold wealth, the death of his enemies, you name it. Instead, he asked for the wisdom to lead God’s people well. He passed on all the things he could have had to benefit himself and instead asked for a gift that would benefit everyone, and God blessed him richly for his choice. To quote the old knight in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade…” he chose wisely.” In the Gospel passage, Jesus gives us two parables that give us more examples. In each, the person finds something of great value and joyfully gives up everything else to possess it…no regrets, no looking back, all in. Jesus in the Gospel reading and St. Paul in the second reading both tell us it’s worth it. If we make God the most important person in our lives and choose wisely to follow Him and serve Him, our reward will be great both now and for all eternity. So choose wisely!
