As we prepare for the coming season of Advent, today’s first reading from Daniel and the Gospel of Mark begin to develop the Advent theme of “arrival.” They are written in very symbolic images and colorful language depicting the coming of the “end times” and the beginning of a new creation. It is often referred to as an apocalyptic style of biblical writing. Recalling the Book of Daniel, Jesus tells us, “And then they will see the Son of Man coming in the clouds with great power and glory, and then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the end of the sky.” We are neither informed of how or when this will occur, only that it will come. Jesus also tells us that He doesn’t even know when this day will arrive, “but only the Father.” Jesus cautions us “Be watchful! Be alert. You do not know when the time will come.” How do we remain alert and watchful year after year during our entire life? By always being prepared to meet our Lord and our Creator as faithful disciples. These readings help remind us to take every opportunity to demonstrate our love for God and to care for our neighbors. It is a continuous journey as if there is no tomorrow.
