Today we remember Blessed Dedë Plani. He is a man about whom we admittedly know very little. His life seemed quite ordinary until its end. Dedë was born into a Catholic family from Albania and was baptized the day after he was born. Both he and his older brother became diocesan priests. Although he was from Albania, he studied in Innsbruck, Austria, encountering another culture and another language. He was ordained, returned home, and served in parishes in various regions of his homeland. In 1947, after watching the world torn apart by World War II and surviving, he was imprisoned by the Communists. For months, he was tortured and yet never renounced his faith. He died in prison on April 30th, 1948 in Shkodrë, Albania at the age of 57. He is a saint not because he lived an extraordinary life, but because he was faithful to his faith and to his vocation to the very end.
