On the anniversary of the martyrdom of Saint Oscar Romero (March 24, 1980) pray for our sisters & brothers of El Sitio and all the people of El Salvador. Archbishop Romero was the head of the church in San Salvador during the Civil War and was assassinated while celebrating mass by a government death squad. The most recent delegation to our sister parish in El Sitio, El Salvador visited November 16th through the 24th, 2024. A highlight of the delegation is the procession and mass celebrated by the entire village. During his homily, Father Bob Flickinger quoted the words of our beloved St. Oscar Romero: "Thereis away to know if God is near us or far away. Everyone who is concerned about the hungry, about the naked, about the poor, about the disappeared, about the tortured, about the prisoner, about all the flesh that is suffering, will find God nearby. Call out to the Lord and he will hear you. Religion is not praying a great deal. Religion involves this promise of having God near me because I do good to my brothers and sisters. My devotion is not shown by saying a great many words, the devotion in my prayers is easy to see. How do I treat the poor? Because that is where God is." Father Flickinger went on to say, "All my brothers and sisters in the delegation always find God here in El Sitio." The delegates thank the parish of St. Catherine of Siena for its support over nearly twenty-five years. We continue to advance the kingdom of God in Portage and El Sitio.
