Today we celebrate one of the greatest mysteries of our faith, the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, our belief that there is one God in three indivisible persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The first reading focuses on God the Father and His relationship with His chosen people at the time of Moses. In the second reading St. Paul speaks about the power of the Holy Spirit and His role in leading us into God’s family. In the Gospel reading, Jesus commissions the Disciples to continue His mission by drawing more and more people into God’s family via baptism in the name of the Triune God. Three persons, one God…a concept that we can either struggle to rationalize or lovingly accept. We believe that the three persons of God exist in a loving relationship with each other; God is love. The love that exists within God cannot be contained; God has shared that love with all creation, and especially with us who are made in His image and likeness. God calls us to the same loving relationship that He has within Himself…we are to both love Him and all that He has created just as He does. That love needs to be put into action, and Jesus showed us how. It is as simple, and yet as complex, as that. God is love, we are part of God’s family, and therefore we are to be love and show love to the world.
