Today’s readings talk about being prepared to meet Jesus. The Gospel story tells us about ten virgins who were sent out to await the bridegroom; five were “wise” and took extra oil for their lamps, and five were “foolish” and didn’t. When the bridegroom arrived later than expected, the five “foolish” virgins were not prepared. None of us know when we will meet Jesus. Even St. Paul, in his early teachings, expected Jesus to return before any of His followers died. He eventually had to adjust his thinking, as we hear him telling the people of Thessalonica in today’s second reading. In this context, it’s tempting to think about these two
readings referring to Jesus’ second coming. However, there is another way to interpret them considering the first reading. In the reading from the Book of Wisdom, wisdom is equated to a beautiful woman who is not only highly desirable, but who has gifts that she longs to share with those who pursue her. Early Christians interpreted this as a parallel to their relationship with God, constantly seeking Him and constantly receiving the wonderful gifts He shares. In this light, the Gospel story can be related to our daily lives, not just to Jesus’ return. God desires to share His gifts with us daily, but we must be “prepared” to receive them. How much time do we spend daily focusing on God and allowing Him to speak to us? We’re all busy, but making time for God to share with us is the most important thing we can do. There are many ways to pray, but we need to make time each day to allow God to speak to us. Nothing is more important!
